Department of Biofunctional Chemistry
The Department of Biofunctional Chemistry is concerned with a complex field of chemical and biological sciences, focusing on the chemical elucidation and highly efficient utilization of the functions of living organisms. In this department, various biological phenomena, their underlying information, and bio-resources will be analyzed at the molecular, cellular, organ, and individual organism levels. In addition, organic synthesis of biologically active compounds will be examined on the basis of their chemical structures elucidated. Research and education will be conducted on the following items: structure and function of macromolecules, nutritional and physiological functions of foods, analysis of metals contained in foods and water, organic synthesis of insect pheromones and kairomones, analysis and exploitation of specific activities in microorganisms, biochemical analysis and industrial utilization of the functions of animals, plants, and microorganisms. Students are expected to establish their careers through these curricula to become leading engineers and researchers with fundamental and broad knowledge in the field of bioscience and biotechnology.
