Notification on the establishment of Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Kobe University

 Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Kobe University, was established as a result of the reorganization of the Graduate School of Science and Technology in April 2007. The new Graduate School of Agricultural Science will be composed of three departments according to their disciplines, i.e. Agricultural Engineering and Socio-Economics, Bioresource Science, and Agrobioscience. Students can receive advanced and integrated educational programs in both master and doctor courses.

 Students who complete courses prescribed for the Master’s degree program are able to obtain a Master of Agriculture degree. Students who complete the courses prescribed for the PhD program are able to obtain Doctor of Agriculture or Doctor of Philosophy.

Information of Master course in Graduate School of Agricultural Science

  1. Mission and goal of Graduate School of Agricultural Science

    The mission of agricultural science is to promote welfare of human society through basic and advanced researches for conservation of natural and agro-ecosystems, and production, management, utilization and development of bioresources supporting our daily living. To achieve this, Graduate School of Agricultural Science consisting of the following three Departments provides students with higher education and research training in a wide range of subjects related to “Food, Environment and Life”.

    The mission of agricultural science is to promote welfare of human society through basic and advanced researches for conservation of natural and agro-ecosystems, and production, management, utilization and development of bioresources supporting our daily living. To achieve this, Graduate School of Agricultural Science consisting of the following three Departments provides students with higher education and research training in a wide range of subjects related to “Food, Environment and Life”.

    (i)Department of Agricultural Engineering and Socio-Economics provides students with research and education programs aimed at the development and improvement of an integrated system for sustainable production, distribution and consumption of foods through collaboration of agricultural engineering and social-economic sciences.

    (ii)Department of Bioresource Science provides students with research and education programs aimed at the search, development, utilization and improvement of animal and plant genetic resources that ensure sustainable agricultural production of high quality foods and other biological materials for human use.

    (iii)Department of Agrobioscience provides students with research and education programs aimed at the understanding of mechanisms underlying complex agro-life systems that can be utilized to enhance food safety and development of high quality agricultural products through combined approaches that employ knowledge from the basic sciences of biology and chemistry.

    In our graduate education programs, students can acquire advanced knowledge and scientific skills in specialized fields in each Department, and also can grow diverse viewpoints and deep insights into integrated disciplines for “food, environment and life”, through acquisition of needed credits from different Departments within the Graduate School. Our goal is to educate competent researchers with originality, creativity and credibility, teachers for higher education, and professionals with specialized knowledge and techniques needed in management and leadership positions necessary to lead our local and international society.

  2. Admission policy

    Master’s courses in Graduate School of Agricultural Science aim to foster creative individuals who have not only broader knowledge in each major field of study but also abilities to find solutions for particular issues and to have interdisciplinary view points. To achieve these goals, the Master’s programs accept students with basic scholastic ability at the undergraduate level, excellent logical-thinking faculty, intellectual curiosity, motivation, and inquisitive and ardent spirit in learning agricultural science. Selected students must also have desire to apply knowledge and skills to promote our industrial society, public agencies and related sectors.

  3. Features of education in Master's courses

    1) Students can acquire extensive and interdisciplinary knowledge of agricultural science by taking a core subject, which is corresponding to "Food, Environment, and Life".

    2) Various subjects provided in the Master’s course are systematically constructed to relate to subjects of the PhD program.

    3) Students can acquire good ability to organize their research programs and to present and describe results in a comprehensive manner by taking “Public Speaking and Presentation”.

    4) Students can acquire interdisciplinary viewpoints by taking “Advanced Lecture of Integrated and Cutting-edge Science Disciplines I”, which is available to students in all four Graduate Schools for natural sciences in Kobe University.

    5) Students can acquire comprehensive knowledge required to become professionals with higher expertise by taking special courses, which are provided and certified in cooperation with other Graduate Schools of natural sciences.

    6) Students can acquire practical knowledge that is required for leading professionals in international sectors by taking subjects related to sustainable food production and environment conservation in Asian countries.

  4. Master’s degree and enrolment to the PhD courses

    To earn a Master degree, a student shall complete all requirements including submission of a qualified master’s thesis, and pass the final exam. Students completing the Master’s program can continue their study in the PhD program without paying additional admission fee. Students of excellent achievement in their research and study can enroll the PhD program after more than one year of study.

To achieve these goals, the program will accept students who have basic scholastic ability at the level of master’s degree, excellent logical-thinking and exceptional ability at making comprehensive presentations, intellectual curiosity and motivation for learning agricultural science. Accepted candidates must have the potential to become good research scientists, teachers in higher education, or professionals with expertise who can serve as leaders in industrial society, public agency and related fields.

  3. Features of education in the Doctoral course

    1) Students can acquire higher education based on advanced scientific researches in each Department.

    2) Students can acquire academic and professional capabilities to participate in international societies through the educational systems, in collaboration with foreign universities. This will help promote students’ competence in understanding scientific publications as well as effective communication of research findings and discussions in English language.

    3) Students can acquire interdisciplinary viewpoints by taking subjects from other Departments as well as “Advanced Lecture of Integrated and Cutting-edge Science Disciplines II”, which is available to students of the four Graduate Schools in the natural sciences in Kobe University

    4) Students can take subjects in related courses from approved external institutions, which will help promote their talents to meet diversified and contemporary needs of our society.

    5) Students with excellent achievements in scientific research in the doctoral course may be allowed to obtain Ph. D degree after more than one year’s enrollment.

  4. Doctoral degree

    To earn a doctoral degree (Doctor of Agriculture or Doctor of Philosophy), a student must complete all required courses including submission of a qualified doctoral thesis, and pass the final exam.
